Are condoms vegan?

FACT

Most condoms are NOT vegan because they contain casein.

Most condoms are not vegan as they contain casein, a milk protein. Green Condoms are vegan.

What is casein?

Casein is a milk protein, a highly profitable byproduct of dairy farming. This milk comes from cows and sometimes, goats. When milk is soured, the curds and whey are separated. Casein can be found in the curds.

Casein is a milk protein and a by-product of the dairy industry. It can lead to allergies and has a sour smell.

What is casein used for?

Casein is used to help make rubber condoms smooth and thin. It is normally added to the liquid bath to soften the latex, so it becomes smooth and flexible. Casein also gives conventional condoms that sour latex odor and may also increase sensitivity in those allergic to latex.

Casein is used to make latex smoother and finer. Green Condoms produces the condoms at a slightly higher temperature in order to NOT use casein

Why is it bad?

If you’re vegan or have a dairy allergy, you definitely want to avoid using condoms made with casein. The use of ingredients such as bones, gelatin and casein in processing is another way many industries make money from animal “waste”, contributing to animal cruelty profitability.

How does Green Condom Club avoid using casein?

We produce our condoms at a slightly higher temperature than most manufacturers. The specific formulations and ingredients we use allow for us to do that without using casein or testing on animals, and without compromising on product integrity.

The Green Condoms have transparent ingredients, are vegan, safe and reliable (CE and ISO certified) and have no smell or taste

So, how do I know if a condom is vegan?

It’s actually not that easy! Most manufacturers do not indicate the components they use to produce their condoms. Since condoms are classified as a Class II medical device, manufacturers are not required to list their ingredients.

Or go latex-free

Non-latex condoms are made of polyisoprene or polyurethane. No latex means no casein!

But that does not mean they are 100% vegan - the manufacturers may still be involved with animal testing or animal-related ingredients.
